DOT Physical Requirements

What you need to know to pass with Dr. F

Vision

≥ 20/40 in each eye (with/without correction)
≥ 70° horizontal field of vision
Recognize red, green, amber signal colors

Hearing

Forced whisper at ≤ 5 ft, or
Average ≤ 40 dB at 500/1000/2000 Hz (with/without aid)

Blood Pressure → Certification Length

< 140/90: Eligible for 2-year certification (if otherwise qualified)
140–159 / 90–99 (Stage 1): 1-year certification
160–179 / 100–109 (Stage 2): 3-month temp; once controlled < 140/90 → usually 1-year
≥ 180 / ≥ 110 (Stage 3): Disqualified until controlled; then typically 6-month certs
